Manolito sent south to check the price of cattle spots a stage being robbed and one of the robbers killed. He catches up with the second robber and recovers the money but the robber escapes. He stops to clean up before returning the money when a posse arrives and arrests him. The guard identifies Manolito as the robber. When he hears David Redmond is in town, he asks to see his old friend. Redmond has the Marshal release Manolito and tells Manolito to meet him and his wife at his house. At the house Manolito finds the town founder shot to death and the Marshal behind him to arrest him. Buck has beat out Manolito for the right to go to Mexico to attend a large Fiesta in a small town there known for a wild time. On the way he stops for a drink at a cantina in Mexico where he sees the local sport of boy fighting. The boys are orphans owned by men who wager on their fights. Seeing the losing boy Beto taking a beating Buck stops the fight to rescue him. When he learns the boy is essentially a slave, he decides to take Beto with him against the wishes of Homero José who owns Beto. With the help of the Mexican Federales, the two escape town but are tracked down by Homero. During an attack they lose Buck's horse but Buck is able to get Beto to a poor family farm where they are fed. Homero catches up them but the farmer ultimately ends up shooting Homero. While rounding up horses, a group of hands are attacked by Apaches ending with a man dying on each side. At the Apache camp the Chief is dying. He has named Two Pony to be Chief after he passes. The brave Grey Wolf led the raid on the ranch hands believing it is the Apaches' duty to kill all whites. Two Pony on the other hand believes the Apache can only survive through peace with the whites and he is encouraged to try it by the dying Chief Dull Knife. After hearing Two Pony's request for peace, Big John decides to try it by having the Apache take on the job of rounding up wild horses, breaking, and shoeing them. While cleaning house Manolito and Victoria open a locked chest finding a badge, handcuffs, and a wanted poster for a man looking like Buck. Buck comes in to explain the items and tells them he is the wanted man on the poster which has no name. He and friends after the war roamed around but could find no jobs so three of them decided to rob a bank which Buck was against. He made the foolish decision to intervene to stop it and instead was pegged as one of the robbers. A shooting during the robbery resulted in Parsons being wounded. A man who appears to be an Apache is chased by them to the High Chaparral ranch where he falls off his horse passed out. The Apaches are chased off. When they examine the man, they see he is a young white man. After he awakes, they learn he has been held as an Apache slave for fifteen years but still speaks English. He says he wishes to return to the white world and hates the Apache. Big John leaves it to Sam who decides to hire Talbot. Wind and Buck have reservations about Talbot's true intent and many of the hands believe he thinks as an Apache so they don't trust him. Three outlaws mistake Buck for the man who has been following them. When Gait takes a shot at Buck his horse rears and Buck hits the ground knocked out. Dan Casement finds and tends to Buck. Because of an attack at another settlement, Big John races out to recall the hands to the ranch. He and Manolito find Buck who discovered a wounded Apache who tried to kill Buck but failed due to his wound. They return to the ranch with the Apache and prepare the ranch for a sustained attack by the Apache. Three soldiers arrive who tracked them with the Apache who is Sangre Chief of the Apache who has led an army of 200 braves out of the mountains. After the Army troops leave near closing time, a trio of bank robbers enter led by the renown and aging outlaw Morgan MacQuarie. A rain storm wipes out the herd of horses Big John is selling to the Army. He decides to go north into Apache lands under the control of Chief Red Eagle to gather a new herd. Although wary of the Apaches, he and a crew go there. They are met by Red Eagle who wants peace. A sergeant erroneously tells Stinky Flanagan to shoot his camel who is holding up the Army. Flanagan has no heart to kill Tillie so he releases her but she returns after scaring Buck's horse forcing Buck to walk to Tucson. Buck was sent to town with $40 to buy a mule. In a saloon Buck meets Flanagan who has deserted the Army with Tillie. He tells Buck how useful camels can be in the desert so Buck buys Tillie instead of the mule and returns with Tillie and Flanagan with the hope Flanagan can work on the ranch. Problems start from the beginning when the horses all react poorly to the camel and later when Tillie is scared by cattle. Watching a wild stallion on the ranch gives Manolito the itch to get away from the constraints of the ranch. He gathers his things and heads to Mexico where he enjoys the company of wine and women. His old friend/enemy El Lobo arrives with his gang who are wanted. Shortly afterwards two women and a man arrive who are members of the Salvation Army on the way Tombstone. Lucien Charot runs a freight line into Tucson. He has been faking attacks by the Apaches to allow him to raise the prices of the goods he brings in with the aid of some local businessmen. Big John is fed up and after Charot doubles the prices on his last trip he decides to have competition by having a line come in from El Paso through the Apache lands with whom he has peace. Charot keeps pushing the fact there are Apache attacks by having an Apache lance found at the site of High Chaparral cattle killed. To counteract this news, Big John makes a personal trip into Apache land to meet with Cochise who agrees to the freight line. When this doesn't stop Big John, Charot has a local rancher burned out. This causes the local support for the new line to die so Big John and Victoria agree to bring a stagecoach through themselves. Manolito takes Victoria to church where she is kidnapped and he is knocked out by a shot. Her captors take her to the mountains and stage an accident with her wagon going over a cliff. Scalped Apaches are being found on the High Chaparral. In Tucson Big John discovers the owner of a mining company is paying bounty for Apache scalps because they closed his mine. Buck and Manolito catch two wandering Apache boys trying to catch a steer on foot. Buck feeling they are harmless convinces Big John to let him train them as cowhands. The boys soon take to the job plus they have the advantage of having been taught by missionaries. The rancher Allison goes to the HIgh Chaparral to see if he can do the same but is killed by a group of Apaches. Burton who hates Indians and others assume the two boys are guilty so they attempt to lynch them until Buck and Big John intervene. Buck and Manolito spot two young white girls on foot being chased by three Apaches on horseback. They are able to save the older girl but her sister is retaken by the Apaches. They give chase but run into a larger group of Apaches. Buck promises the girl they will retrieve her sister later. Blue is saved from being killed by a highwayman by Paddy O'Bannion, a prize fighter in the Tucson Fourth of July celebration. On a trip to Tucson Blue spots a silver saddle for $300. Blue immediately falls in love with it but has only $18 which he puts down on it with the rest promised by 5:00 pm July 4. He and the other ranch hands believe they can win the money at the rodeo for the saddle while Victoria declares she is fed up with the men fighting. The men fail at the rodeo except for John. It doesn't look good for buying the saddle. Blue is shoved into sparring with one of the prize fighters for fun. As he heals Blue is enthralled with Dan's stories about him and Blue's mother. Buck, however, is highly suspicious of Dan but John appears to accept him. Once Dan learns to walk again, he makes a pass at Victoria accusing her of taking advantage of John. Buck tells Dan to pick a horse and leave but the real heat is when Buck unwittingly hires the two bounty hunters after Dan who wounded him. The High Chaparral men rescue an Apache chased by three miners. The Apache had shot at them while prospecting on High Chaparral property. Big John warns them to stay off his ranch and frees the Apache. Victoria is upset with Buck and Blue when they come to dinner filthy. When she berates them, Big John over reacts causing her to feel unwanted by him. Big John has Buck and Sam take Victoria to town to shop after apologizing to her. Buck is to buy black powder to blow up the old mine the miners were prospecting. The miners ask two Indians to ambush Buck, Sam and Victoria on their return trip home. While looking for a trail with water to move cattle over. Big John and Blue separate from the others taking a trail busy with Apache sign. A lone Apache steals one of their horses so Blue races after him, wounds the brave and returns with the stolen horse. However, they find themselves surrounded by Apaches lead by sub-chief Soldado. He takes their horses, water, hats and weapons telling them they will see if they can survive as well as Apaches. They decide to track the lone Apache Blue wounded who is on foot with the hope he leads them to water. They capture him and his knife. In a sandstorm they spot Buck and Manolito but cannot catch them. Big John falls into a cactus during the storm hurting him plus he is required to remove the bullet from the brave's shoulder. On the range Blue and Manolito witness two Apaches chasing a third on horseback attempting to kill him. The Apache being chased is fatally wounded. Before dying, he tells them that the Medicine Man Nock-Ay-Del will be visiting the High Chaparral where sub-chief Soldado plans to assassinate Nock-Ay-Del. At the ranch Nock-Ay-Del and a second brave arrive asking to talk with Big John. Buck is highly suspicious but Big John insists the two enter the house to talk. After a long ceremony including smoking a pipe, they learn Cochise sent them to discuss a peace whereby Big John pays for the land. The High Chaparral ranch hands have orders to not cross into Mexico for their safety. To capture Manolito the Mexican revolutionary El Caudillo sends his girlfriend Conchita who uses several ruses to lure the men across the border to rescue her where they are captured. Manolito who knows El Caudillo is arrested and sentenced to be executed. El Caudillo allows the other prisoners to roam the town freely so Blue escapes during a distraction as El Caudillo hopes. He returns with Don Sebastian Montoya who believes he can free Manolito but is jailed and sentenced to death as well. El Caudillo has the rest of the ranch hands jailed so they may be executed as well during a fiesta to celebrate the start of his new revolution. Posing as a priest Manolito helps break his friend Santos Castaneda out of jail in Mexico before he is executed. He smuggles Santos and his sister Pilar into the United States to High Chaparral where they can rest and await the arrival of Benito Juarez, the Mexican revolutionary. Unbeknowst to Manolito and Pilar, Santos wants to be dictator of Mexico so he is planning to assassinate Juarez at the High Chaparral. Santos men steal High Chaparral cattle causing John to send his men out to look for the cattle leaving few people at the ranch house. While Buck and the men are in Tucson, Marshall Virgil Packer rides in with a body. He asks Buck if he or his men will join a posse to chase the Mexican bandit El Lobo. Buck states no High Chaparral men will join him. Later at the ranch, Packer arrives to ask Big John. After hearing what El Lobo has done, Big John states he will not order but will allow his men to join Packer if they wish. Buck is against it because he knows El Lobo is hiding on Montoya land.
